Orionโs Atlantic division is delivering a $120 million design-build infrastructure project to support construction of what will be the largest dry dock facility in the world at the Grand Bahama Shipyard. The project includes extensive marine construction, dredging, pile-supported structures, and shoreline protection to support the installation and operation of the new dry dock. The Grand Bahamas Dry Dock Facility project involves major marine infrastructure development to support the installation of the worldโs largest dry dock. Orionโs scope includes demolition of existing structures, construction of a 715-foot finger pier extension, installation of four mooring dolphin structures, and dredging of approximately 500,000 cubic yards of material using one of the largest cutter suction dredgers operating in the Atlantic basin. Additional work includes installation of 14 pile-supported access structures, upland limestone aprons and drainage systems, shoreline retaining walls, rip rap shoreline protection, and grading of more than 40 acres of reclaimed dredge material to support future site development.
Executing a project of this scale in the Bahamas presented unique logistical challenges, including geographic isolation, supply chain constraints, hurricane exposure, and limited local resource availability. Orion addressed these challenges through a combination of Bahamian and expatriate personnel, strong partnerships with local suppliers and subcontractors, and careful planning of barge mobilisations to transport major materials and equipment to the site. Steel pipe piles were shipped directly from overseas mills to the project location to streamline procurement and reduce delays.
The project team also developed innovative construction methods to safely install extremely large guide piles used to secure the dry dock. These 123-foot-long, 84-inch-diameter steel pipe piles required a specialised lifting approach using a watertight steel plug that allowed buoyancy to assist during crane lifts. In addition, Orion utilised a precast concrete approach for pile caps and deck planks, transporting nearly 9,000 tons of precast materials by barge and installing them directly in their final positions โ accelerating the schedule while reducing underwater concrete placement risks and improving overall quality.

After migrating the project from a legacy project management system midway through execution, the team successfully adopted InEight to improve monitoring of productivity, cost trends, and overall project performance.
